"L' Amore"
Hans-Peter Feldmann
The only established fact about the six photographs in
concept artist Hans-Peter Feldmann’s series “L’ Amore” is
that he found them. However, one deems it possible to
visualize, on the basis of photographic conventions, the
circumstances in which the photographs have been taken.
Feldmann chose the title “L’ Amore”, which is as interpreting
as much as it is romanticizing. In contrast to the
clichéd tourism and advertising industry images of
“Amore”, Feldmann’s “L’ Amore” is subjected to a numerical
principle – the woman three times, the man three
times, each once dressed, twice naked. This strictness
imparts the character of a study to the series. It also points
to the combination of commonplace and intimacy. Posing
at a foreign place in front of a bed of flowers is among the
commonest subjects. The pictures taken in the hotel
room, on the other hand, appear to be unique just because
of their unspectacular character and their visual plainness.
Since the depicted persons seem to mostly refrain from
self-dramatization, the pictures convey an impression of
privacy. Thus, Feldmann demonstrates with these images
how quickly seemingly private moments may become public.
They are not suitable material for the yellow press,
though, but depict a private scene between two persons
with different skin colours – a relationship which is still
being frowned upon by many. Solely through the selection
and its exhibition, Feldmann’s series of images thus
becomes a political statement. Most important for him is
which information is being conveyed by the pictures themselves,
and the circumstances in which pictures are taken,
publicized and perceived – in a nutshell, their everyday
use. One of this uses is viewing the images in exhibitions,
a place which visitors enter with preconceived personal
imaginations.
Artist, born 1941, lives and works in Düsseldorf.
