"Ise-Kyopos. Die 2. Generation der im Ausland lebenden Koreaner"
Cerin Hong
Ise or I-Sae means second. Koreans in Korea use Kyopos
to describe all Koreans living abroad. Between 1963 and
1967, 18,000 highly trained Korean nurses came to German.
They were recruited on account of a feared lack of
nursing personnel. At the same time but independently,
7,000 Koreans came to Germany to work in mining, even
though some of them were academics. In her first documentary
film, the film maker Cerin Hong has portrayed
the children of these migrants. They tell of their living situation
in Berlin and in the Korean community. An excerpt
of this film is being shown at the exhibition.
In the film, the interviewees, mostly women and all around
20 years old, tell of how their parents came to Germany
to make something of their lives. In fact, the migration
from Korea was filled was characterized by career hopes.
In each case, they were the “best” in their professions, and
they came, as the historical film material shows, as proud
representatives of their country - also “fresh as the new
day“, as a TV reporter commented when they arrived by
airplane. In Germany, they were placed in the category of
low-wage workers. When the women talk of their parents,
the film about the second generation is also a glance at
their parent’s generation.
Filmmaker, born 1975, lives in Cologne.
