„Ohne Titel“
Dan Perjovschi
During a sojourn in Cologne, Dan Perjovschi has created
numerous drawings, which were then traced onto the interior
and exterior walls of the exhibition space by the collaborators
of “Projekt Migration”. This multiplication is an
integral part of the conception. In their contents, the
drawings make reference to present-day political issues
during Perjovschi’s stay. They are comments and interventions
within the (semi) public space.
The drawings are to be seen in the context of Perjovschi’s
multifarious artistic practice. In collaboration with his
wife, Lia, he heads the first independent archives of contemporary
art, the CAA, in Bucharest. Since 1991, he has
been the art director of the weekly magazine “22”, which
was founded by former dissidents under the Ceausescu
regime. This journalistic praxis sparked the idea to publish
his political illustrations, puns and commenting texts
in other spaces, too: on the internet or in exhibitions.
These pictures, which resemble comic strips, criticize
every-day opportunism and ignorance as well as developments
in international politics. One of their recurring
themes is the role of Eastern European countries within
the process of Europeanization as a “process of civilization”.
For example, the perpetuation of a self-imposed
censorship, which was enforced during the time of the
dictatorship in Rumania, in the pressure to adapt to Western
“values”; the willing subjection under consumption
and communication in the Late Capitalism; or the
renewed recalling of Christianity in the EU. Perjovschi’s
response to Angela Merkel’s campaign for a “privileged
partnership” against Turkey was: “No Turkey. No Thanksgiving.”
He also reflects on his own role in an art world
where Western institutions yearn for young and fresh art
from Eastern Europe. He tries to elude the friendly
takeover, not least by the fact that the drawings will vanish
after the end of the exhibition, and will from then on
solely circulate as documentation.
Artist, born 1961, lives and works in Bucharest.
