“Door”
Ene-Liis Semper
“Door” shows the view through a door ajar, behind which
something seems to be moving. Someone is walking to
and for, waits, hesitates, but never steps through the door,
even after it opens a bit more. Yet, there is nothing on this
side of the door that would hinder the person from crossing
the threshold. In “Door”, like in her other video performances,
Ene-Liis Semper reenacts a psychological conflict.
The performances evince her having studied theatre
and stage design at the Estonia Academy of Arts, and
change between strategies of the theatre and categories
of the arts, in this case between the theatrical setting on
the one hand and the reference to 1970s body and video
art on the other hand. Through her own body, she visualizes
anxieties or habits that result from social conceptions
and are oftentimes associated with structural violence.
For example, her performances deal with themes such as
seduction, or a suicide that is not committed since the
film ends beforehand and keeps repeating itself – akin to
“Door”, where the act of passing through the door will
never take place. Here, the conflict lies in the inner struggle
with an imaginary or real barrier, and the impossibility
to overstep it.
Artist, born 1969, lives and works Tallin.
