“Radio Emigrek”
Marily Stroux
The photo journalist Marily Stroux has concerned herself
with migration and refugees for years, and she also brings
her photographs into play in the context of social and political
movements. The exhibited pictures show two collaborators
at Radio Emigrek. The station, which was founded
in 1993, had existed for five years then, and was a part
of the Open Channel in Hamburg. It positioned itself as
an information channel and provided, apart from music, a
public platform to exchange migrant themes and problems.
Following the idea of an Open Channel, the group
of radio activist with its twelve members created the programme
independently or invited friends and interested
people. Radio Emigrek was founded at a time when nationalist
tendencies emerged in student organizations in Hamburg
in the early 1990s. It also offered the possibility to
bring one’s own themes into the public. The programmes
were broadcast every Friday afternoon, following the official
Greek news show.
Photographer, lives in Hamburg.
