“Protest gegen die
Schließung des Stahlwerks
Krupp Rheinhausen”
Manfred Vollmer
Manfred Vollmer has been taking photographs in the
industrial world of the Ruhr district since the 1970s. As a
photo journalist, he is beholden to committed social photography,
and has shown his solidarity in supporting many
demonstrations and struggles. He has also documented
structural change, including unemployment. The protests
against the closures of the iron foundries in the 1980s, in
Hattingen and Rheinhausen, make up an important part
of his work. In 1987/88, Vollmer photographed the struggle
against the closure of the Krupp foundry in
Duisburg/Rheinhausen. It was one of the largest protest
waves in the Ruhr district, with concerts, schoolchildren’s
campaigns, religious services and, above all, repeated
demonstrations. On one of the photos by Manfred Vollmer,
“Schimanski” and “Tanner” (“Tatort”) show the broad
extent of support for this industrial action, which also
included the blocking of a motorway. Vollmer’s pictures are
documents of joint campaigns by the international labor
force, and also show legendary moments: for the first time
in the history of the labor force, a company headquarters
was occupied, here Villa Hügel of the Krupp dynasty. The
workers march to the villa and gather in the entrance hall
under a grand portrait.
Photographer, born 1944, lives and works in Essen.
