DOMiT: Social History of Immigration
www.domit.de

The Documentation Center and Museum of Migration from Turkey, DOMiT, was founded in 1990 with the aim of initiating a museum for migration. In the course of the "Project Migration" a research team from DOMiT has been working through the history of labor migration from Turkey, Italy, Greece, Spain, former Yugoslavia, Portugal, Morocco, Tunisia, South Korea, Viet Nam, Angola, Mozambique and Cuba. The research also addresses the contract workers in the former German Democratic Republic and their difficult position following reunification.

DOMiT intends to contribute to establishing a cultural memory, which also considers migration from the perspective of the majority society as part of its own history. Official and private documents are collected, everyday objects, letters, photographs, newspaper articles, film and sound recordings, interviews or posters that document the history of immigrants since the first recruitment agreements. The collection is also dedicated to the history of those people who immigrated apart from the respective state treaties. It takes into consideration all the wishes and exigencies that have led people to seek to improve their own living conditions, whether because of unbearable political, economic or family circumstances or a search for better educational opportunities.

The DOMiT archive that is unique throughout Germany and the special library document the everyday life of immigrants beyond attributions and cliches. The archive includes testimonies of self-organization and participation in political and cultural life.
