TRANSIT MIGRATION: Transnational Migration in the Course of Europeanized Politics
www.transitmigration.org

In the course of global migration, former "guest labor" recruitment countries have themselves become regions of immigration and transit. From the perspective of transnational, global migration Europe is moving to the periphery. In addition, the current expansion of the EU not only shifts the external borders, but also results in European policies in which the nation-states have less and less influence over the control of migration, although they still seem to determine the discourse.
The subproject TRANSIT MIGRATION investigates the new dimensions of transnational migration und supranational forms of government. Research teams from the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt/Main, the Research Society Flight and Migration, Berlin, and the Institute for the Theory of Design and Art at the College of Design and Art, Zurich, are conducting their research on this primarily at the external borders of the EU: in Greece, in former Yugoslavia, Poland, Spain and Turkey. On the basis of their investigations and media and discourse analyses, film, sound and cartography projects are realized in cooperation with artists, architects, musicians and filmmakers. TRANSIT MIGRATION provides pioneering work for a new scientific and cultural practice by means of ethnography and social science, art and media production, thus contributing to new forms of the visualization and discussion of current changes in mobility and government practices.

Within the framework of the overall project, TRANSIT MIGRATION is responsible for two international symposia, "transnational europe I. migration across southern/eastern borders", which took place in Rethymnon (Crete/Greece) in October 2004, and the continuation "transnational europe II" in 2005 in Cologne, where Germany and Europe will be considered from the perspective of global migration movements.
